U.S. News & World Report highlights our nationally recognized strength of care, including survival rate and patient experience
Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and WashU Medicine has been ranked among the best nationwide once again by U.S. News & World Report, and the top cancer center in the St. Louis region and Missouri in the publication’s new regional specialty rankings. The recognition is part of the overall ranking of Barnes-Jewish Hospital on the news magazine’s Best Hospitals 2026-2027 list, released today.
The cancer center rankings incorporate many factors, including survival and complication rates and patient experience. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital received the highest possible recognition, placing Siteman among the top 3% of the nearly 750 hospitals evaluated by U.S. News.
High-performing specialties that contribute to Siteman’s national recognition this year are: leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma — all part of The Blood Cancer Center at Siteman — and colon, gynecologic, lung and prostate cancer surgery.
Additionally, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was ranked among the nation’s best for neurology and neurosurgery. These programs at Barnes-Jewish Hospital share many of the same WashU Medicine physicians as The Brain Tumor Center at Siteman.
Siteman Cancer Center also received recognition for having:
- High patient volume, with U.S. News noting that more experience is associated with better outcomes.
- Effective nurse communication during patient stays.
Siteman Cancer Center also was recognized for being a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center — the only one in Missouri and southern Illinois. As an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Siteman is expected to be a major researcher into the causes, prevention and early detection and treatment of cancer, and to share these findings so other healthcare institutions also might implement them to improve the overall health of the population. These efforts include a focus on basic science, which is the search for foundational knowledge about cancer risk and therapies, and on clinical research such as clinical trials designed to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative cancer therapies.
Since 2015, Siteman has held NCI’s highest possible rating — “Exceptional” — demonstrating the highest level of excellence in cancer research, patient care and community outreach.

In April, Newsweek named Siteman Cancer Center among America’s Best Hospitals for cancer care, noting breast, colorectal, lung and prostate cancer as standout specialties. The news magazine also recognized Barnes-Jewish Hospital as one of the best nationally for neurological care, noting brain tumor surgery as a standout specialty.
