Samuel Urrutia, MD, MS, Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist from Siteman Cancer Center discusses how people can get all sorts of different types of blood cancers. Some start in the bone marrow, while others begin in the lymph nodes, and the cancers he focuses on typically originate in the bone marrow. Dr. Urrutia explains that blood cancers are completely different from solid tumors. there is no tumor growing in the body, and they do not use the usual stage one to four classifications seen with other cancers. Because of this, treatment is entirely systemic, meaning it must be delivered either as a pill or through IV infusion.
