Siteman Travel Award
The Siteman Travel Award supports the career development of scholars and early-career faculty* engaged in cancer research by providing funds for travel-related expenses (e.g., registration, airfare, hotel) to present research at conferences and/or attend workshops/trainings. All eligible cancer-related research trainees and early-career faculty are encouraged to apply.

Applications
- Scholar must be officially affiliated with a member of Siteman Cancer Center through Washington University, BJC, Children’s Hospital, SLU, or University of Missouri. Early-career faculty (Instructor or Assistant Professor who has not yet held an R01 or equivalent award) must have an official existing affiliation similar to the scholar requirements above or be a Siteman Cancer Center member (list available here).
- Must be actively enrolled or appointed as an undergraduate student, post-baccalaureate trainee, pre-doctoral trainee (graduate or doctoral student), resident, research fellow, or early-career faculty member at the institution of the affiliated Siteman member at the time of application and travel.
- Conference location eligibility has recently expanded and is now unrestricted (international permitted).
- This award may be used as a supplement to other scholarships, but may not be used to duplicate other resources.
- Research must be cancer-related, but may be from any level of scientific translation, basic through public health sciences.
- The maximum available per person is $1,500.
- Priority may be given to those who have not received a travel award in the past.
- This is a competitive award. Travel Award applications must be submitted for approval before attending the conference/workshop. Applications received after cycle deadline are not considered or reviewed.
- Scholarships are awarded for the expenses of registration, airfare, and hotel (lodging only).
- Prioritization is given to applicants attending conferences who are 1) podium/oral presenters, 2) presenting posters, or 3) attending workshops or training. Multiple roles at the conference will increase competitiveness.
- Attendance, participation, and presentation(s) must be related to cancer research. The conference itself does not need to be cancer focused.
A complete application must include the following four components:
- Complete online application must be received by corresponding application cycle deadline and include:
a. General applicant information
b. Conference information (dates, location, trainee role, etc.)
c. Description of how your presentation or participation in this conference addresses the unique cancer needs of the Siteman Cancer Center’s catchment area. For further information on local cancer statistics and health disparities, please refer to the Siteman Cancer Center’s Catchment Area Data and Statistics Hub.
d. Short description of research presented or intended training assuring cancer relevance in lay language (500 character limit)
e. Describe how your specific presentation or attendance at the conference/workshop will benefit your research and promote your professional career more generally (i.e. job prospects, academic standing, etc.) (500 character limit) - Research Abstract (upload at the end of the online application)
- CV (upload at the end of the online application)
- Letter of Support from mentor that includes verbiage related to:
– As applicable, provide language confirming role at institution and cancer relevance (predoc, postdoc, Instructor, etc.; optional LOS from Department Chair for applicants at the Assistant Professor level; 1 page limit; upload at the end of the online application)
– Recommendation for travel award
Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed according to dates within cycle timelines as seen below. Multiple applications for different conferences within one cycle are allowed.

Awardee Requirements
Funds are to be stewarded responsibility and are approved only for the expenses of registration, airfare, and hotel/lodging specifically for the conferences and travel dates included in the award letter.
Award funds must be processed within two weeks of either the award notification date or the completion of conference-related travel, whichever occurs later. Funds not processed within this timeframe may be forfeited. Misuse of award funds may result in ineligibility for future Siteman funding opportunities and/or other institutional consequences.
Awardees will be required to complete a short Post Conference Survey that asks describe how the conference helped your career objectives and research and what professional connections were made. This report also allows conference participation photos to be submitted. Submissions are encouraged and may be used for marketing. The format of this report and other information will be sent to award recipients.
Awardees may be approached to engage in other Siteman training and education related activities as reviewers, committee members, or board members for Siteman Cancer Center trainee initiatives.
