For this funding opportunity, hard-to-treat cancer is defined as 5-year survival less than 70% in an individual childhood cancer (e.g. osteosarcoma, AML, DIPG), in a childhood cancer with unfavorable behavior (e.g. relapse or metastasis), or in a molecular defined subtype (e.g. MLL rearranged leukemia, PAX3-FOXO1 rearranged RMS). Roughly two thirds of cancer deaths occur in LMICs where five-year survival rates are lower than in high-income countries. Innovative new cancer control methods are needed that address the unique needs in low- to middle-income countries.

RFP Snapshot: The Elsa U. Pardee Foundation funds research to investigators in United States non-profit institutions proposing research directed toward identifying new treatments or cures for cancer. The Foundation funds projects for a one-year period which will allow the establishment of capabilities of new cancer researchers or new cancer approaches by established cancer researchers. It is anticipated that this early-stage funding by the Foundation may lead to subsequent and expanded support using government agency funding.

Max Amount and Period: No limit for 1 year

Eligibility: Priority is given to researchers at non-profit institutions in the United States who are new to the field of cancer research, or to established research investigators examining new approaches to cancer cure. Post-docs are eligible to apply and need to have an independent researcher included as a co-PI. This faculty member needs to be included as personnel on the submission. A letter of support is requested from the post-doc’s mentor which reinforces their oversight and leadership for the research, as well as the intent of the funding to dedicated support of independent research for the post-doc. Faculty members who are still early in their careers, as well as new faculty members and postdocs, are generally given more opportunities from Pardee Foundation as they tend to have lesser funds at their disposal in this point of their career.
